in defense of Dean Forester (a silly post by an old Supernatural fan and a new Gilmore Girls fan)

Hi there! Long title, wasn’t it?

I realize that I’m stepping in a hornets nest here. After all, a quick google search let me know that noooobody likes Dean Forester, and I’m gonna be absolutely honest with you – I’m new to Gilmore Girls! I’ve never seen it before, and I just started it last night, so I’ve only seen 14 episodes thus far haha! But, I think that there’s something very important that we all need to realize and accept about Mr. Dean Forester, and that is that … he does NOT exist! He is just Sam Winchester in disguise!

Hear me out! (I’m sure this joke has been made before, but please humor me!)

Little Sammy, as we all know, had a rough childhood. Growing up hunting monsters, ghosts, and demons, does not leave much time for your regular little league games and elementary school science fair projects that Sammy would have so enjoyed. We also know, that before the start of season 1 of Supernatural, Sam and his Dad, John Winchester, had a falling out which resulted in Sammy ‘running away’, so to speak, to attend college as a ‘normal’ kid, who was just estranged from his family for ‘normal’ reasons. We’re just gonna rewind the clock a bit and say that maybe his first stop was – Stars Hollow.

Now, there are a couple of options for how Sam Winchester could have ended up in Stars Hollow, and we’ll go through them each one by one.

  • First: This was the beginning of his ‘running away’ phase, where he split from Dean and John, attended high school and then eventually college, where he met Jess (his girlfriend Jess not Milo Ventimiglia’s Jess from later seasons of GG), and then the rest is history.
  • Second: Dean and John were working a particularly nasty case and they dropped Sammy off in Stars Hollow to hang out for awhile while they went off hunting.
  • Third: Sam was/is/always-has-been in Stars Hollow BECAUSE of a case with Dean and John.
  • Fourth: Stars Hollow was the location of Sammy’s first ever solo job.

Whichever event led to Sam ending up in Stars Hollow, all of “Dean Forester’s” mysteriousness, awkwardness, standoffishness, and toughness can be explained once we all realize and accept that “Dean Forester” doesn’t exist! Sam Winchester is just living a lie.

First now, lets explore the options of Sam Winchester being in Stars Hollow NOT on a job (either Sammy ran away or his brother & dad dropped him off). That would mean that we had a Sammy that was eager to re-invent himself. To leave the identity of Sam Winchester behind and become someone entirely new! Unfortunately, when they asked him for his name he, missing his brother, said “Dean. Dean – Forest, er. Forester. Dean Forester.” (cause c’mon, forester is a made up name [no offense to any foresters reading this hahaha]!!)

Equipped with his new name, “Dean” enrolls in high school, meets a pretty girl, and falls in love!

OR … Second, let’s explore the ‘being there on a job’ options. If he’s there on a job, the whole ‘attending high school’ thing is just a cover and not Sam trying to start a new life. The thought process for the name is probably the same though. His reasons for approaching Rory could also be the same – she was pretty, he liked her, he made a move, he fell in love. OR, it could be that there was something ‘haunting’ the Gilmore’s or the people around the Gilmore’s and so Sammy was just trying to get close to gank whatever monster it was.

Regardless of how he ended up in Stars Hollow things are far from perfect, as everything, but his feelings for Miss Rory Gilmore, is a complete and total lie.

It’s really sad when you think about it! He talks about how he has “sisters”, either in an attempt to disown his brother Dean, or as a secret inside joke that only he’ll be able to laugh about now that he’s all alone. Then later, he talks about his Mom, and how she cooks dinner for his Dad every night, painting the picture of a perfect Leave It To Beaver style family – that little Sammy Winchester never had. 😥

Then, there’s the dance episode! “Dean” tells Rory that he ‘doesn’t go to dances’ – of course he doesn’t, because he’s never done any of those normal, usual, teenage school things! He seems very uncomfortable dressing up in formal wear – of course he would! The Winchester’s wear leather jackets and jeans. That’s it! Then, there’s the confrontation with Tristan. Sam, aka “Dean”, tells Tristan, ‘I’m not fighting you’, and ‘you don’t wanna fight me… cause I’ll kill you, idiot.’, and as we know for Sam Winchester that is a one hundred percent true statement! Sammy Winchester is MORE than capable of absolutely destroying anyone in Stars Hollow. Being raised with a Glock under your pillow will do that to a person.

I haven’t gotten to the bits where it all falls apart for Rory and “Dean”, but I’m sure that when it all does, it will be symptomatic of the classic Winchester ‘push-away’ routine, of needing to be on the move, and keeping people at a distance so that they don’t get hurt, traumatized, and/or killed. “Dean” would have to/will end things with Rory, maybe (quite probably) even be a bit of an ass about it, to protect Rory Gilmore from the Winchester curse. (which typically involves a lot of death!)

Other proof that “Dean” is just Sam Winchester in disguise:

1: on movie night he buys the Gilmore gals pizza and grabs a salad for himself – a very healthy Sam Winchester thing to do! 2: the leather jacket – do I even need to explain about the leather jackets? 3: the swagger. Winchester’s have swagger. 4: “Dean” is sensitive just like Sammy, but also not to be pushed around (him talking to Lorelai on that first movie night about how ‘he’s not going anywhere’ and ‘I need you to like me’, boy was he a lot braver in that moment than I expected him to be!).

Imma wrap it up here… maybe I’ll add more thoughts into the comment section of this post as I continue watching. Cause, like I said, I’m new to Gilmore Girls and I’m only 14 episodes into the first season – but I’m loving it! And as an OG Supernatural fan and especially a fan of the Real Dean Winchester, I felt it was my duty to point out that “Dean Forester’s” flaws exist because “Dean Forester” does not exist – Sam Winchester does!

Who is Kas? STRANGER THINGS Theory

There will be SPOILERS in this post for Stranger Things seasons 1 – 4… so, if you have not seen the show and intend to get caught up on it, then please, refrain from reading further until you have seen it.

Are you ready now?

Good.

Then, let’s begin…

There is a lot of speculation online that Joseph Quinn’s character from Stranger Things, Eddie Munson, will be making a comeback in Stranger Things season 5 as the D&D vampire baddie Kas, a long time servant and eventual betrayer of villain Vecna, played onscreen chillingly by Jamie Campbell Bower.

Now, as someone who has only played D&D once (and that was in a star wars style campaign), my only knowledge of Kas the Bloody-Handed comes from friends, google searches, and fan theories. However, based on the brief description of his character above we can theorize as to which Stranger Things character best fits him.

#1: Eddie Munson

As I’ve already said, Eddie Munson is the popular candidate for Kas. Not soley because fans desperately want to see him back, myself included, but for a number of valid reasons.

  • Reason number 1: he was killed by upside-down bats. Maybe those bats didn’t kill him, they simply turned him into a vampire who’s now subservient to Vecna.
  • Reason number 2: Steve mentions vampires. When theorizing with Eddie & co. about who Vecna really is Steve brings up ‘vampires’. A moment that earns him some eyerolls, but they’ve never mentioned vampires before – and in previous seasons when a creature from d&d (such as zombies) is brought up, we’ve been almost guaranteed to see an upside-down version of that creature within the next season.
  • Reason number 3: Jamie Campbel Bower and Joseph Quinn have been doing a lot of press together. Now, that could mean nothing – or it could mean that they’re hanging out cause they’ll be having lots of scenes together next season…

#2: Steve Harrington

Steve Harrington is an extremely viable candidate for Kas and here’s why.

  • Reason number 1: Those bats! Just like Eddie, Steve gets attacked and gnawed on by those pesky upside-down bats. Robin makes a big rambly deal about ‘infections’ and ‘rabies’, which is all valid and understandable – but these are upside-down bats. Maybe instead of rabies they ‘infect’ their victims with vampirism!
  • Reason number 2: again – those vampire references. Those casual references to vampires could’ve just as easily been pointing to Steve as to Eddie.
  • Reason number 3: it would just suck! Steve Harrington has become a fan favorite over the years (he’s definitely a favorite of mine!) and it would be just the punch in the gut that fans would hate but not be too surprised by.

But honestly – I think we’ve ALREADY seen Kas…

#3: Billy Hargrove

Yes, you read that right, Billy. I think that Billy Hargrove was/is Kas – and here’s why.

  • Reason #1: Flayed. While not being a vampire, Billy did get flayed, which had him stumbling around like one of the undead. Zombies are the walking dead, but vampires are the undead. So, while all the rest of the flayed were zombies, there’s no reason that Billy couldn’t have been a vampire…
  • Reason #2: Betrayal. Right at the end, before Billy dies, Eleven manages to get through to him. When the Mind Flayer (who we now know was/is Vecna too) attacks, Billy stops it, saving El’s life and buying them all enough time to close the gate once and for all and (they think) kill it.
  • Reason number #3: “Kas killed him!” In the beginning of season 4, when they’re playing D&D with Eddie and he reveals that Vecna is alive, Mike shouts “No, Kas killed him!” Which is what everyone thought at the end of the previous season, that Billy had helped them ‘kill’ the Mind Flayer aka Vecna. Unfortunately, for Billy and all of us, Vecna lived.

There are two other options for who Kas could be

#a1 – Eleven

The line “Kas killed him!” could also be referring to how Eleven ‘killed’ 001 aka Henry aka Vecna back in the past, after having been manipulated to follow him and then learning the truth and turning on him.

#a2 – Will

Will, much like Billy, was mentally controlled by the Mind Flayer, aka Vecna… he too was cold like the dead, totally subservient to the mind flayer, and in the end turned against him… well – was forced to turn against him. It’s possible that Will could have both been Kas in season 2 and be him even more in the upcoming season 5…

I feel like I’m getting lost, so I’m going to put a pin in it here.🤣

Dora: Crazy Good Explorer? Or Just Crazy?

After watching the 2019 live action production of Dora the Explorer, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, I’ve come to the conclusion that Dora, is in fact, crazy!

The movie showcases many alarming symptoms, both in Dora and in her surroundings, that lead to that very diagnosis.

#1: Dora’s parents being worried about her strange habit of “talking to herself”.

#2: Diego’s distance.

#3: The prescription looking “iodine” pills.

#4: Talking animal friends and enemies.

#5: Manic attitude and seeming lack of empathy.

Let’s start with #1: Dora’s parents being worried about her strange habit.

At the start of the film, Dora is going around exploring, doing the classic annoying talking to the camera thing, that viewers of the cartoon kid shows (and many memes since) will most certainly remember. She looks right at the camera several times and says, “Can you say ___?”

When she does this in front of her parents, they look around, all scared, in fact pretty freaked out, looking for the person or animal or thing that their daughter could be talking to, but there’s nothing and no one. Creepy!! To add to it, Dora’s father attempts to copy Dora at one point, to which Dora’s mother chides him saying, “don’t encourage her.”

Moving on to #2: Diego’s distance.

Again, at the start of the film, Diego is living in the jungle, with his family, as Dora’s cousin, neighbor, and only friend, but one day his parents decide to uproot their lives and move to the city. Could it be that Dora’s insanity has frightened Diego’s family, and in an effort to protect their son, they did the only thing that they could and left? That’s where my money would go!

#3 now: The prescription looking “iodine” pills.

On Dora’s first day of public school in the city she is stopped by the security guard, who empties out her backpack revealing everything from an emergency tent kit to a flare to a personal generator. Amongst her belongings we see a little orange pill bottle, much like the ones that all prescription meds come in, that Dora quickly explains contains “iodine pills, for sanitizing water.”

Well… were those really iodine pills? Is it possible that her parents had her on anti-psychotic meds and that they simply just changed the label on the bottle? I think so.

And then, we get to #4: Talking animal friends and enemies.

Now, fans of the original cartoon will remember that Dora had a pet monkey named Boots, and a dastardly thieving fox enemy named Swiper. Of course, in the cartoon the animals could talk, because it was a children’s cartoon. But, this is a live action movie that is trying to make Dora seem more like a real person.

Yet, Swiper exists – and can talk. And later, towards the end of the film, when Dora is feeling down in the dumps and starting to doubt herself, her monkey friend Boots also talks to her. In a very deep and unsettling voice I might add. The rest of the movie involves hallucinogenic plants, magical Incan guards and nobody being phased by any of these things!

What’s more realistic – that all of these things exist and this story is just taking place in an alternate reality from ours where talking foxes and monkey’s are common and strange Incan demons are a dime a dozen? Or, that Dora is delusional and hallucinating during a large portion of the movie? I vote for the delusional storyline. 🙋‍♀️

Finally, we arrive at #5: Dora’s manic attitude and seeming lack of empathy.

Dora is cheerful – but alarmingly so. I never saw a single scene where she was tired, and the one scene where she was a bit upset with Diego felt unrealistic because it was so out of character. The entire film she is just a wound up ball of energy that doesn’t stop.

Then, there were a couple of moments where other characters were struggling and Dora’s response to them felt a little – off. Her female classmate is uncomfortable about having to go potty break in the jungle, to which Dora responds by singing a song. At another point, there is another man trapped in a swamp and he is being swarmed by two deadly scorpions. Dora watches and narrates the whole thing, sounding pretty happy, fascinated and unattached. The concerns and fears of her companions don’t seem to faze her at all.

Just to be clear, the movie is not saying that Dora is crazy, but at the same time – they totally are!

It would’ve made for an incredibly fascinating dark movie if they had decided to lean into the bread crumbs of insanity that they had already dropped, but understandably they wanted to make it a movie that children could watch. I still wouldn’t let my children watch it though, not because of the unbelievable nature of it, but because of all of the weird pagan stuff that they threw in at the end (Boots was totally a demon btw!).

For the first time I have to say that, while I had fun, this a movie that I would not recommend and I myself will not be watching it again. 😝

But, I did have a fun time – and if they decided to do a dark Dora one day, then I would totally watch that!

Ni No Kuni: It was all in Ollie’s head

Masterfully crafted by the master craftsman Hayao Miyazaki, Japanese genius behind anime classic hits such as Spirited Away, Ponyo, and Castle in the Sky, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, is a 2011 PS BANDAI videogame.

It follows the adventures of young boy Oliver, affectionately dubbed Ollie, who after losing his mother in a tragic accident finds himself transported to another world. A magical world, full of faeries, talking cats, as well as scary villains that are going around breaking peoples hearts. Drippy, Oliver’s doll turned faerie, informs Oliver that his mother’s Soulmate, a person with the same soul in this parallel magical world as in Oliver’s home world, the great sage Alicia, is alive and in danger from the evil heart-breaking sage Shadar.

With the help of new friends that are the Soulmates of his old friends, Oliver sets out to become a great sage powerful enough to defeat Shadar and save his mothers Soulmate Alicia, in the hope that that will save his mother back home in his home world.

This game is so beautiful, and I wish that it was a TV show or full movie because it is genuinely my favorite Miyazaki story hands down!!

It is very beautiful and tragic, dealing with grief and coping – and that is what I’m going to be talking about today. (There will be spoilers in the rest of this post, so if you don’t want to be spoiled – then just hit subscribe now, and enjoy another blogpost. 😀 )

I believe that the case can be made that the magical world in this game is all made up – it’s all in Ollie’s head. He never actually traveled anywhere, he didn’t learn any magic, he just played around town, letting his imagination run wild while coming to terms with the death of his mother and the reality of his future.

To start off, in the very beginning when Oliver is first mourning the loss of his mother Drippy, a doll that was a gift from his mother, comes to life and starts telling Ollie-boy to stop crying. Because, Oliver knows that his mother would want him to be a big boy, and big boys don’t cry. Big boys are brave, kind and strong.

From there, Oliver and Drippy travel to the magical world – choosing to do SOMETHING as opposed to staying home alone and wallowing in grief. Oliver and Drippy embark on a courageous mission.

In the magical world he encounters all manner of people with broken hearts, that have Soulmates in his own hometown. Drippy informs Oliver that it his job to heal the broken-arted. Because, Oliver himself is broken-hearted and he needs to do something to heal himself. Sometimes, the best way to heal ourselves is to heal others. In order to heal the broken-hearted people in the magical world Oliver needs to help the people in his own hometown.

There are these “Nightmares” that he has to battle, Nightmare monsters that drain people of all enthusiasm, kindness, courage, restraint, belief, confidence, love, and ambition. He helps the neighbor girl, who’s been made to stay inside by her father, who’s been overcome by fear, and in the magical world that little girl becomes his companion and fierce friend. And on and on and on…

Ultimately, he faces off against Shadar and discovers that Shadar, the evil villainous sage that has been spreading darkness and despair, is HIS soulmate. Which shows that Oliver’s worst enemy is himself – it’s his anger, his bitterness, his despair, his grief that has poisoned everything. His mission to defeat Shadar can just be viewed as his mission to defeat his own Nightmare.

But, it’s not just defeating – it’s healing. Shadar needs to be healed. Oliver needed to see what he was capable of becoming and then to get himself, Shadar, to realize his wrongdoing – which he does.

Once Shadar has been defeated, Oliver moves on to facing off against the titular villain, The White Witch, another little girl who lost her father at a young age and then made mistakes so grievous that she felt as if the only solution left to her was to destroy everything, so that “a new world could begin.”

To which Oliver responds “You can’t just tear it up and start over. It may not be perfect, but nothing is. So, you make the best of what you’ve got. When things go wrong, you have to try and make them right. And you have to keep on trying, no matter how hard it gets. That’s what life is all about. Even when you’re all alone, you can’t give up. Sooner or later, someone’s sure to come along… You take things as they come, and you keep on going.”

Ultimately, it’s a story about healing grief – healing the grief in ourselves and others, and allowing others to heal the grief in us and teaching them how to heal the grief in themselves.

After all of the magic – Oliver returns home saying, “Mom, I’m going to get on with my life. And I know you’ll always be watching over me.” You see him pass all of the people in his homeworld, that were the people that he’d helped in the magical world, and you realize – he never went to any other place. He just met and helped the people in his own life, using his imagination to help him cope with his own grief, healing the grief of others to heal himself.

It’s such a good story!

I hope I explained things well! It’s such a long, complex game, with so many storylines and layers, that I hope that I explained what I wanted to explain clearly.

I’m not a gamer, but I loved this game so much and would highly recommend it to people of every age and sex.

Young Lady and Gentleman aka Positive Parasite

Young Lady and Gentleman is a weekly Korean drama that is currently airing on KBS on Saturdays and Sundays. American fans, like me, can catch the episodes on Viki.com, with English subtitles complete by Monday or Tuesday.

It stars Ji Hyun Woo as the widower and father of 3 Lee Young Kook, and Lee Se Hee as the bright young tutor who’s down on her luck Park Dan Dan.

It’s a classic Korean tale of interwoven familial relationships.

Unbeknownst to anyone, Park Dan Dan & her father & her brother get tangled up into both personal and professional relationships with different members of Lee Young Kook’s family. Once Park Dan Dan starts working as a tutor she discovers that her father has been recently hired as the driver, and then later they discover that her brother has begun a romantic relationship with Lee Young Kook’s sister.

It turned into a Parasite situation real quick!

The only difference being – Park Dan Dan’s family is really, really nice!

They’re all good people, with strong moral conviction (so far at least!) and have had no intention of taking advantage of this rich family. That’s why it’s Positive Parasite! 🙂

What’s really fun is that the show knows that it’s being similar to Parasite and says so a couple of times. That’s why things kind of do blow up when their familial relations are revealed.

I am thoroughly enjoying this show and terribly excited by the fact that it is going to have 50 episodes!!! You heard me right! 50 episodes! It’s really tough waiting every week for new episodes though!

The one thing I’ve noticed about Ji Hyun Woo’s shows is that they always have really good cliffhangers. Seriously, in every show every episode ends on a major cliffhanger! Which is great 😀 and horrible (cause of the waiting!!).

The only thing so far that has been not my favorite has been the soundtrack. I don’t dislike it, but it’s been more funny then breathtaking. Love in Sadness for example had an awesome soundtrack. The music was it’s own character. The music in this show is a character too, just more of a silly clown than anything else.

But even so, I can promise you that I am going to watch every one of those 50 episodes!:)

Tale of the Nine Tailed is Inuyasha!

Now, I know what you’re thinking.  “No, it’s not.”  “What’s Tale of the Nine Tailed?”  “Is Inuyasha one of those cartoon thingys?”  The answers to all of those questions are – yes, a brilliant kdrama, and basically.

Tale of the Nine Tailed is a TvN Korean drama airing during the fall months of 2020.  If you’re like me, an American, than you can catch it on Viki.com.  I first drafted this post when the show was first airing back in 2020 – but I took a break from the show (I still haven’t finished it!). So, now that seasons 2 and 3 have just been announced it felt like the fitting time to finish the show and share this post!

It stars Lee Dong Wook as the titular “Nine Tailed” Fox, or Gumiho.  Anime fans would refer to him as a Kitsune.  Sonic fans would say “Oh, like Tails?” all of which would be correct.  He’s a mystical fox.  “But, wait?” you’re now saying, “Isn’t Lee Dong Wook human?” and you would be right.  He is human.  Gumiho’s or Kitsune’s can and usually do take on human form.  So, don’t worry.  You’ll be able to see Lee Dong Wook in all of his sharp-jawed, newly-dyed red-brown hair perfection.

Staring alongside Lee Dong Wook are the beautiful Jo Bo Ah as the leading lady and primary human, and the talented Kim Bum (who, incidentally, was one of the first Korean actors I ever saw, but I digress) as the mischievous little brother.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is where the similarities begin.

As we all know (and if we don’t all know then please, just pretend), Inuyasha is a Japanese anime series about a half demon dog and his human friends (and girlfriends) who work hard to defeat big baddie Naraku by collecting all of the Shikon Jewel shards before he can.  Inuyasha, as I’ve said, is a half demon dog, but one of his traveling companions, little Shippo, is a fox.  Yes, a nine tailed fox!  A Kitsune.  A Gumiho.  All of the things.

An interesting fact – but a little bit of a further digression.

Basically, I feel like someone in the writer’s room wanted to know “what would happen if we combined Inuyasha, Shippo and John Wick?” and they came up with Kim Bum’s character.

Let’s get into the nitty gritty details.

Why is Tale of the Nine Tailed Inuyasha, huh?  Explain it to us!

I will!

#1:  Red

As we all know, Inuyasha wears red:

Here, we see Kim Bum also wearing red:

A lot!

See what I’m saying?  But wait, there’s more!

#2:  Antagonistic half brothers

In Inuyasha we have Sesshomaru:

Who is a full dog demon and brother to Inuyasha:

A half dog demon or, as they like to call him, a half-breed.  The brothers hate each other!  At least, they’re always fighting and trying to kill each other.

In Tale of the Nine Tailed we have Lee Dong Wook:

The full fox, and Kim Bum:

A half fox, who are constantly fighting and trying to kill each other. 

Still not convinced?  Well what if I told you…

#3:  Swords & Claws

Both sets of Brothers use swords as their preferred weapon of choice, although in both Inuyasha and TotNT, the little brother makes good use of his claws.

#4:  First Meetings

They first met, both in the past and the present, when she was a little girl.  In the past he was literally resting against the base of a large tree, just like Sesshomaru. 

In the present, in episode 4, he goes to the underworld to pay for saving her life – and in Inuyasha Sesshomaru went to the underworld to rescue Rin.

#5:  Kim Bum is Inuyasha

The obnoxious half demon that’s wears red and is constantly trying to fight his older brother.

#6:  Lee Dong Wook is Sesshomaru

The powerful fox demon that is stoic but falls in love with a human.

#7: Jo Bo Ah is Rin

The innocent young human who falls in love with the protective fox demon.

In conclusion – it’s Inuyasha but Inuyasha if Sesshomaru was the protagonist. In Inuyasha he’s the one with the human lover that dies and is then reincarnated.  In Tale of the Nine Tailed it is the Sesshomaru characters’ human lover that dies and is reincarnated.  

Now that it’s fall again I’m really excited to re-watch and finally finish this show!

And I’m SOOOOOOOO excited for future seasons!

Thor 2 is the Time War from the Dalek POV

You heard me right!

I recently re-watched Thor: The Dark World (because, who wasn’t re-watching those recently?) and I couldn’t help but notice certain similarities between it’s storyline and that from the Doctor in Doctor Who and his accounts of the Time War.

First things first I need you to know – The Dark Elves are the Timelords and The Asgardians are the Daleks. You with me so far? Alright, let’s go.

We hear the tale of how The Dark Elves attacked and how their leader, who was cruel and terrible, killed his own people to end the war (and disappear, saving himself).

Just like how the Timelords were at war with the Daleks (who started what is irrelevant here) and the Doctor “killed” the Timelords, his own people, to end the Time War against the Daleks. And then, he disappeared in his Tardis, saving himself.

So, the Daleks then were the Asgardians trying to save the world from the Timelords, excuse me Dark Elves, and their dark matter world transporty machines. Sounds like tardis’s to me.

All I’m saying is that, in the Dalek’s eyes, they’re the good guys, the benevolent rulers, the beautiful gods that are keeping the peace in the realms. And the Timelords are the evil dark elves that are trying to destroy everything.

Feel Good To Die = A Christmas Carol

I know what you’re thinking – “Huh? What’s feel good to die? Isn’t she a little toooo obsessed with a Christmas Carol over here?” And, I’m not, but I can see how you might think that. If you didn’t think that then just forget about this and let’s move on.

Feel Good To Die is a 2018 (it came out around Christmas time – ha!) KBS2 drama starring Baek Jin Hee and Kang Ji Hwan.

Baek Jin Hee, a regular office employee, ends up stuck in a ‘time loop’ repeating the same day over and over again Groundhog Day style till she can successfully reform her abrasive boss Team Leader Baek, played by Kang Ji Hwan.

Apart from it being delightful and absolutely HILARIOUS it is also A Christmas Carol.

I’m going to assume we all know the plot of A Christmas Carol and just jump right into the role assignments.

In the Dickens novel we have Scrooge, the mean old miser, the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, the Cratchet family (and Scrooge’s friends) and Old Marley’s Ghost.

In Feel Good To Die Scrooge is – you guessed it, Team Leader Baek, Kang Ji Hwan. He’s not angry or bitter or evil or anything so you might not immediately make the connection, but he is rude, condescending and completely oblivious to other peoples thoughts, feelings and lives – oh and he doesn’t take responsibility for anything.

Enter the Ghost of Christmas Past in Baek Jin Hee. Baek Jin Hee is the one stuck in the time loop, literally stuck in the past, forced to experiencing the same events over and over again till a significant change is made to break the loop. There are so many fun episodes where they show her struggling to break the loop and she does and then there’s another loop and another and it goes on and on. The only way to break the loop is to change herself and her boss Team Leader Baek.

We get the Ghost of Christmas Present in the body of Gong Myung. He’s a super positive, secret grandson of the CEO, always ready to do the right thing kinda guy. He reminds me a lot of Scrooges nephew too. He’s constantly telling Baek Jin Hee and Team Leader Baek to be in the present, work in the present, fix things in the present. It can’t get any clearer than that.

The Ghost of Christmas Future is the one the started it all by wishing for the death of her ex-boss Team Leader Baek. Unfortunately I’m having a hard time finding her name, but I’ll find a picture of her. She fell into a coma after refusing to leave her building as it was burning as she saw no point – to anything anymore. They hardly show us her face throughout all of it, every camera angle is just so that it’s hard to see her. It’s so hard to see her cause I can’t find any pictures of her or her scenes! So, here’s a fire gif to give you an idea.

The Cratchet’s would be any and all of the employees on Team Leader Baek’s team and througout the whole company, and the Ghost of Marley would be the bosses and his old colleague.

I was surprised by how much I really loved this drama and by how well they were able to do A Christmas Carol without making me even really realize till the end that it WAS A Christmas Carol!

So, if you’ve ever thought to yourself, “man, I’d really like to watch a Christmas Carol, but I wish it was more modern and Korean with time travel!” then Feel Good to Die is the drama for you!! It is currently available to stream on (you guessed it) Viki.com.

Star Wars: Snoke was THAT little boy?!

HERE’S WHAT I WOULD’VE DONE: EPISODE 2

SNOKE THEORY (waaaaay past it’s expiration date, I know!)

I think my favorite thing about the sequel trilogy was all of the thought experiments that it gave me.

I mean, if it had been completely perfect then there would’ve been nothing for my writer brain to theorize about, pick apart, or flat-out re-write in my head.

As things stand – oh lordy, are there plenty of things to think about!

(I mean, c’mon, this scene was ridiculous!)

Here’s one that was a theory of mine from waaaay back in the day right after The Last Jedi came out, you know, back when things were iffy in the Star Wars world but nobody had yet witnessed the absolute mess that was The Rise of Skywalker, so people were still generally amicable.

The Last Jedi ended, as you may recall, with a shot of a little slave boy using the Force to call his broom to his hand before staring out at the stars, the writers wanting us to think ‘oh boy, things are changing around here!’. Well, haha, here’s what I have to say to that.

Rewind the film a little bit, and you remember that Kylo killed Snoke, his oppressive, giant, decaying master, to save Rey.

My theory, was that Snoke had discovered the secret of immortality and that Snoke was in fact Darth Plagueis the Wise. The secret to immortality, to not-dying, and the explanation for Snoke’s decaying body was – well, soul jumping.

I think, that Darth Plagueis had learned to soul jump and was jumping from body to body to body and at the end of The Last Jedi, when he got killed, his soul jumped into the body of that little slave boy, and now he was plotting revenge against Kylo, Rey and the galaxy. THAT was why the slave boy suddenly had the Force, even though he hadn’t had it earlier in the film when he’d met Rose and Finn. THAT was why he was looking out at the stars so seriously.

And then, instead of them basically doing a poorer version of that with Palpatine (“somehow – Palpatine returned.”) the third film would’ve seen our heroes having to battle with (and possibly kill/have to think about killing) a child. Not an evil child, but a child that was being possessed by Darth Plagueis. Oh, the drama that could’ve ensued!

Then, you could’ve gone into a whole ‘maybe Palpatine himself WAS Plagueis, maybe there had only ever been Plagueis, maybe Plagueis was the first ever Sith Lord and he was just constantly soul jumping from body to body, and that’s why there was only ever two sith – Plagueis and the body that would eventually BECOME Plagueis! And, if he was the first sith, then maybe Rey was the reincarnation of the first ever Jedi and that’s why she was so strong and important!’. By the way, I have so many thoughts about Rey. You can look forward to many more posts about her and my thoughts and theories (good and bad) on her character.

But basically, yeah, I think (and will always think) that that little slave boy at the end of The Last Jedi was/should’ve been Snoke, still alive, plotting more evil for the galaxies and coming for Reylo’s head.

Loki Finale – We’ve Seen You Somewhere Before!

Yes, we have seen Loki somewhere before, but no I’m not talking about the Multi-Verse or any of the Marvel movies or indeed any of Mr. Hiddleston’s movies. I’m talking about the content similarities in the finale of the first season of Loki. Don’t get mad Sylvie & Loki, it only makes sense that the show would copy classics just as you two did.

Similiarity # 1: Nevermore aka Shadar’s Castle from Ni No Kuni, and the concept of fighting/killing alternate versions of oneself.

Similarity # 2: Castle Fairfax aka Lucien’s Castle from the beginning of Fable 2 and the awful choice that has to be made by our Hero(s) at the end.

Similarity # 3: The Dark Tower written in the 1940s by Mr. CS Lewis and the monster sitting alone in their tower watching other timelines as well as the history of the discovery of time travel that included a mad scientist experimenting on children.

First, Nevermore…

If you’ve played (or would now like to play) Ni No Kuni, the Miyazaki PlayStation adventure game, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. Near the end of the game our hero, Oliver, finally makes it to the evil villain Shadar’s castle, the castle Nevermore. The mission is all very topsy turvy, with the camera angles constantly shifting and turning till it feels for some of the time like you are playing upside down. And Loki gave us that with the twisting turny camera angles as Loki and Sylvie entered the Citadel at the End of Time.

Then, Oliver gets to talking to Shadar and Shadar tells him about how the two of them are Soulmates and that Oliver shouldn’t have even been born because he, Shadar, had been going about and killing all of his Soulmates to prevent any of them from mending his Broken Heart. Much like how our Kang, or He Who Remains, in Loki talked about how he met himself many times over and that some of him were much, much worse.

Second, we have Fable 2 and Castle Fairfax…

The room that Loki, Sylvie and Kang are sitting in looks EXACTLY (ok, almost exactly) the same as the room that the main character and the main character’s sister, Rose, enter into in the very beginning of the game. The room where Lucien, the master of the castle, kills Rose and then attempts to kill the main character thus propelling the plot of the game.

Then, at the end of Fable 2 the hero is given 3 choices – 1 good, 1 evil and 1 neutral and the player of the game is free to choose whatever choice they’d like. Much the same as Loki and Sylvie are given the choice of Rule the TVA or Unleash the Multiverse and let chaos rein! More or less.

Third, we have The Dark Tower by CS Lewis.

Not to be confused with The Dark Tower by Stephen King, ok, CS Lewis wrote his unfinished tale years before King was even born.

But anyways, in The Dark Tower this group of scientists have created this Chronoscope that allows them to look through a scope into another time, a timeline that is projected onto a fabric screen. Much like the projection screen in the first episode of Loki when Mobius is showing Loki his timeline. Through the Chronoscope they are able to view this valley that has a singular Dark Tower in it’s center. In the tower sits a still dark figure that I don’t want to go into here, but suffice it to say if you’d like a good little scare then please, go and read Mr. Lewis’s unfinished story, it is quite hair raising.

Jumping over a lot of major details there is then a sequence in the story where one of our characters finds himself in that other timeline reading up on their history of time travel discovery. Just like Kang a scientist created a device, discovered that there were other timelines, discovered that there were other versions of ourselves on those timelines and decided to experiment, using the young of course, on crossing over into those other timelines. Unfortunately for us, this is where Mr. Lewis stopped writing so we don’t get much more, but the similarities between Kang and the scientist in this other timeline were so striking that I found myself shouting at my laptop “they’re just doing The Dark Tower!”

I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that there are more time travel classics buried in this final episode of Loki alone, not to mention the entire show, but these were just the major comparisons that I couldn’t get out of my head.

Finally, I would just like to finish by saying I LOVED this show and I CANNOT WAIT for season 2.
